The permanent home of the Hellenic Museum will be a symbol of the contribution that Hellenes have made to Western Civilization We have embarked on a grand mission. We are building a national institution to honor our parents and grandparents. The only one of its kind, we are building a renewed sense of home for generations of our children. We are building so that we, as Greeks in America, can showcase our best for generations of Americans of all backgrounds. Presently, in Phase I of the Capital Campaign we are reaching out to a select group of individuals, families and associations asking that they join John P. Calamos, Dr. Mary Dochios Kamberos, Frank Kamberos and others in providing leadership to the fundraising effort. While the new HMCC’s Auditorium, Library, Great Hall and one of several Galleries are already committed to Naming Rights belonging to individual and family leadership donors, other elements of the building are available.
The New Building
The new home of the HMCC will house important permanent collections and offer a series of new and inspiring exhibitions and cultural and educational programs. The HMCC is multi-faceted, acting as an archive, a library, a research center, a backdrop for exhibitions and performance space for the better understanding and celebration of Hellenic history and culture. Our commitment to children and education will be incorporated in this new space by creating an interactive environment for hands-on experiences that support life learning and curriculum support for educators and all grade levels. The total cost of the new Museum, including its site, construction, furnishings, artifact acquisition, exhibit and program-related expenses, and Endowment Fund, is significant. Campaign History In 2000, the HMCC secured nearby property for its future site and, in 2002, embarked on a capital campaign to build a permanent, multi-story home at the crossroads of Chicago’s interstate intersections that connect a lively, thriving neighborhood that boldly mixes its rich Hellenic culture and immigrant history with new schools of thought.
In addition to being dedicated to the preservation of the Greek culture both nationally and internationally, the HMCC will be an affirmation of Chicago’s commitment to the recognition of the endeavors of its Greek community. And because of our fine relationship with other arts and educational organizations along with a Membership base that encompasses individuals and families from across the United States, the HMCC is positioned to become one of the premier cultural institutions in the world. The permanent home of the
HMCC is in the heart of the United States, in the City of Why Chicago? Chicago has always been in the center of things – at the crossroads of the largest economy on earth. Chicago is at the center of one of the largest trading areas in the world. It is a non-stop global gateway to 46 international and 134 domestic business centers and its city boasts one of the nation’s top places to offer arts and culture to its public. From the early years to today, most everyone knows someone or has visited this culturally diverse city that offers a wide range of tourist attractions – to include the present (temporary) and future home of the national Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center.
